Still at the top of its game
When it opened in 1997 Keith McNally’s Balthazar was an instant sensation. Not much has changed since then except, if anything, Balthazar is better than ever. Located at 80 Spring Street, it is a thoroughly authentic recreation of a Parisian brasserie. The staff is charming, the food comes quickly, everything is exactly as promised and prices are reasonable. The giant seafood platters to start are fabulous (and pricy). The brandade de morue – baccala and mashed potatoes – is one of the best in town. The onion tart with goat cheese is amazing. Among mains, I love the chicken au Riesling and the shepherds’ pie. I love the wine list with its fruity, stylish and moderate wines. Check out the chocolate pot de crème for dessert. Balthazar– I love this place.
