Every so often, The Edison, a transcendent bar in downtown Los Angeles, will open its doors on a Tuesday night. And, every so often, I will make the trek downtown to see what's happening. Last night we went for their Radio Room event, a showcase of talented guest mixologists from around the country. In the spotlight: Amanda Gager from Las Vegas and Jacqueline Patterson from San Francisco. Both women possess a tough femininity: delicately measuring libations then violently rocking a cocktail shaker in each hand. Their signature drinks prove that these ladies are cocktail goddesses.
Jackie impressed us with her Rum Diary, a comforting and well-rounded blend of Zaya Reserva Rum, organic honey, (a mysterious) ginger solution and lime juice.
The Mr. McIlhenny from Amanda's bar was an addictive, stunning combo of Carpano Antica Formula, muddled basil and a dash of Tabasco.
In addition to the guests' contributions, the house made punch from Marcos Tello was a nod to the Edison's wonderful blend of tradition and innovation. Mixed in small batches and served from a crystal punch bowl into dainty punch glasses, this blend of Tequila, St. Germaine, Apple Brandy and Champagne was a wonderful contribution from the resident mixologist.
Special thanks to Aidan Demarest, Edison's director of Spirits, for arranging such a successful and exciting event.
