The "Healthy" Cupcake

For those with dietary restrictions like gluten allergies or vegans, the cupcake trend has been tough. Most are loaded with butter, flour and refined sugar, but not the ones in Erin McKenna’s BabyCakes, a new recipe book by the owner of the acclaimed New York bakery of the same name. The book features recipes for everything from muffins and biscuits to cookies and cupcakes, most of which are gluten-free, and all of which are sans refined sugar. Recipes are sprinkled with celebrity praises from the likes of Pamela Anderson, Natalie Portman, and other satisfied vegans. The sweets themselves are standard favorites like chocolate cupcakes and apple pie, so don’t look for innovation there, but rather a great alternative for the health-conscious sweet tooth.
