If your kids are still in the holiday spirit, tell them a new Holiday story. In Italy, January 6th marks the Epiphany, a day on which the Three Wise Men were searching far and wide for the baby Jesus. They stopped to ask an old woman, a skinny old hag named La Befana, for directions. She refused to help, and sent them on their way, lost. Later, feeling guilty, she followed after the wise men with gifts for the baby. These gifts included Italian sweets such as biscotti, pandoro cakes, and panettone. She couldn’t find the wise men, but to hedge her bet, she left sweets in the homes of every child she saw. So today and this January, continue the holiday spirit and bake or buy some Italian pastries for your kids, and celebrate La Befana’s gifts.
