If you need an indulgent gustatory respite, ask for vacation time at the end of the month. Because from January 29th-31st, Eugene, Oregon is hosting the fifth annual Oregon Truffle Festival. I’m talking the real fungi that grow in the ground, not the chocolate kind. Renowned truffle researchers Dr. Pierre Sourzat of France, Dr. Carlos Colinas and Christine Fischer from Spain, will be leading two days of truffle seminars. Seven “truffle orchards” are being cultivated in Oregon where an American black truffle industry is on it’s way to being born. Included in the festivities will be a Truffle Dog Training Seminar, a tutorial on how to train your pooch to sniff out the delicacies (and not eat them for himself), as well as a Grand Truffle Dinner, cooking classes, winery luncheons and farm tours.
