A great restaurant on 42nd Street?
I guess Charlie Palmer was looking for a change of scene when he moved AUREOLE from a cozy townhouse on 61st Street to a shinyglass and steel location near Times Square. This is a signature New York dining experience and the change of style makes it more contemporary. The food offers a seasonal take on haute American food. Appetizers featured bright, fresh peaky toe crab and exquisite ricotta gnocchi with black truffles and fresh greens. Main course stand-outs were flavorful German sausage with roasted apples and a lovely purée of red cabbage. Service is highly professional and the wine list is excellent. Desserts were artful and delicious with an ice cream sundae topped with chocolate and caramel popcorn, doughnuts and lemon panna cotta. The new AUREOLE is expensive but it delivers an extraordinary dining experience.
