Proper storage conditions are essential. Bottles can sit at a comfortable room temperature for a few weeks with little damage, but for long-term storage a temperature of around 55 to 60 degrees is ideal. Several companies make wine storage units in a range of sizes, from under-the-counter types to entire walk-ins. These units assure that your wine will be kept under proper temperature and humidity. A small cellar of a hundred or so bottles can be easily accommodated even in a small urban apartment. Keep your wine well away from heat sources and preferably a dark location and don’t stack them more than three high. Be sure to keep records of your cellar, entering such information as date of purchase, price and location in your cellar. And don’t forget a “Drink Soon” category.
