Astonishing in Asti
Most people know Asti Spumanté (or Asti as it’s been called since being upgraded in status in 1994) the famed sparkling wine made in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy. Lesser known but much more deserving of fame is the sublime Moscato d’Asti produced in the same region and with the same grapes (Muscat, Moscato Bianco or Moscato di Canelli), but made with less effervescence, less alcohol and more sweetness. Moscato d’ Asti is the perfect warm weather aperitif. These bubblers are fairly inexpensive—it won’t set you back much to keep a few bottles in the fridge all summer, ready and waiting for festive barbeques with the family. On top of that, Asti makes an excellent base for summer sparkling cocktails. Add fruit purée for a festive summer treat.
