Are you a grasshopper or an ant?
Most people who buy wine drink it the same day it’s purchased. These are “grasshopper” wine consumers. They shop in the afternoon for wine for tonight’s dinner, but they don’t worry about what they’ll be drinking five years from now. The ants among us want a wine collection, laying down bottles for future consumption. There are several considerations to keep in mind when starting a cellar. Rule number one is: Don’t overdo it. Take account of your wine-consumption habits. How many bottles will you really need? Start small. Set yourself a reasonable limit to begin with. Remember, it’s not true that older wine is necessarily better. Wine does have a shelf life, so don’t buy more than you’ll actually consume. You should collect to drink it, not to invest or just accumulate.
