Monterey Staycation Series: Where to Eat
Just as important as where you go is where you eat. The restaurants you choose while you’re away will give you a sense of the city’s culture and help shape the memories of your whole trip. Here are a few places we love for touring the Central Coast by way of tastebuds. Pacific’s Edge $$$$
This aptly named Carmel restaurant showcases breathtaking views of the Big Sur coastline and Pacific Ocean, making it the go-to choice for special occasions. Serving “California Coastal” cuisine, the menu at Pacific’s Edge features all locally sourced ingredients, from daily-caught oysters to foraged mushrooms. (Be sure to make a reservation, tables here fill up quickly—especially on weekends and holidays.)

- Passionfish $$$
For those of you looking to experience Monterey’s renowned fresh seafood, look no further than Passionfish, the Pacific Grove restaurant perched at the tip of the Monterey Peninsula, between Monterey and Carmel. The brilliant menu prepared by Chef Ted Walter focuses on the sustainable seafood caught daily from the Monterey Peninsula waters. With a daily changing menu and sensational wine list, this seafood restaurant serves only the freshest fare while providing a fun, casual atmosphere.
Accolades: National Restaurant Association’s “Best Wine List in America”
- Tuck Box $$
Built in 1927, this cozy Carmel gem is the quintessential English tearoom. Fashioned after a quaint countryside cottage, two sisters from England opened The Tuck Box in the early 1940s. Seven decades later, this historical institution still serves a delicious breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea with charming ambiance. The cute outdoor patio is perfect for a pleasant afternoon. Grab some scones and Devonshire, pour yourself a cup of Darjeeling and make a memory at this iconic Carmel favorite. (Reservations recommended)
Accolades: This tearoom is so picture-perfect that it’s the setting for several scenes in the 2012 film “The Forger,” starring Josh Hutcherson, Lauren Bacall and Hayden Panetierre.
