Whispering Wreath Cocktail
If you need something a little strong post-Thanksgiving, try this Whispering Wreath cocktail, compliments of Eating Well. This cocktail is perfect for the December holiday season and is a more low calorie, but still delicious take on the traditional hot buttered rum. Using a muddler or a large wooden spoon, simply mash together 1 cup sugar, ¼ cup fresh mint leaves and ¼ cup fresh sage leaves in a large saucepan until the herbs are bruised and fragrant. Add 4 cups water and 10 dashes bitters. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, stirring often for about 5 minutes. Stir in 12 ounces dark rum and cook for 1 minute. Add 2 tablespoons butter and cook, stirring until it melts. Strain the mixture into a pitcher, and let stand for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to mix together and mellow. Serve in cordial glasses, and garnish with a mint leaf. Perfect for large parties, this recipe yields 10 servings and contains much less calories and fat than the classic hot buttered rum drink.
