An Ancient Fruit
Aside from the famous figs in the Garden of Eden, the fig has been mentioned in literature since the time of the Babylonians. The ancients loved figs and accurately regarded them as a very healthy food. Lucky for us, figs are in season right now. California's great Central Valley is the source of almost all the figs grown in this country, originally transported by the Spanish missionaries. Try serving fresh, quartered figs as an appetizer with thinly sliced prosciutto, or with a small round of tangy goat cheese. Figs can be used in main courses, too – especially with duck or pork. Or try sticking some fresh figs in your freezer for instant sorbet. And remember, when fig season is over, you can still get dried figs year ‘round. They are a great energy source.
