2014 Oscar Pairings
As the Oscar’s draw near, hosting or attending an Oscar party seems to be the rising trend. To match a great list of nominees, here are some cocktails to go along with Best Picture candidates from my book The Complete Book of Mixed Drinks.
This blockbuster takes place in the 1970’s and nothing screams 70’s like a great Harvey Wallbanger. Rumored to have been created in California, the Harvey Wallbanger was named after Harvey, a local surfer. It was his favorite drink. This concoction combines vodka, OJ, and Galliano for a refreshing twist on the classic Screwdriver.
- 1 ½ ounces vodka
- 4 ounces orange juice
- ½ ounce of Galliano
- Pour the vodka and orange juice into a chilled Collins glass with several ice cubes. Stir well. Top off the glass with a Galliano float.
Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) and Muse (Barkhad Abdi) go to battle as Phillip’s ship is captured by Somali pirates. Based on the real hijacking of MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years, the movie is action packed just like this Pirate’s Julep. What drink is more befitting for a pirate movie than a rum cocktail?
- 6 mint leaves
- 1 teaspoon sugar syrup
- Several dashes of bitters
- 1 scooped c rushed ice
- 2 to 3 ounces golden rum
- 1 teaspoon curaçao
- Mint sprig
- Confectioners’ Sugar
- Muddle the mint leaves with the sugar syrup in a chilled old-fashioned glass. Add the bitters and fill the glass with crushed ice. Pour in the rum and swizzle the mixture until the glass frosts, adding more ice if necessary. Top with the curaçao and garnish with the mint sprig dusted with powder sugar.
Wolf of Wall Street
In the iconic scene where Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DeCaprio) goes out to lunch with Mark Hanna (Matthew Mcconaughey) for the first time, Hanna says “Give us two Absolut martinis, Luis, straight up. And then bring us two more in exactly seven and a half minutes, and then keep bringing them every five minutes until one of us passes out.” So to pay homage to Leonardo and Mcconaughey, here’s a New York martini that is sure to deliver.
Big Apple Martini Martinis by FiftysevenFiftyseven Bar Four Seasons Hotel New York City
- 2 ounces vodka
- ½ ounce sour mix
- ½ ounce apple schnapps
- Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker along with a scoop of ice. Shake well until blended. Strain and serve straight up or on the rocks in a chilled martini glass.
