Cookbook Recommendation: Eat by Nigel Slater
English cookbooks are getting bigger and better by the minute, but landing the Times of London’s “Cookbook of the Year” amidst stiff competition is Nigel Slater’s Eat. This tome is brilliant. A James Beard Award winning author of many books, Nigel is charismatic all the way from his elegant prose to his imaginative recipes. He pioneered a little book of fast, flavorful, inventive food. Chapters are organized by cooking and eating methods. “In the Hand” offers up gorgeous Fig and Goat Cheese Foccacia. You’ll find a delicious, hearty miso soup with beef and kale “In a Bowl”. If you venture “In the Frying Pan,” James’s Potato Tortilla is the obvious choice. Make harissa carrots and cod with lemon, tarragon and crème fraiche “On the Stove.” Oh, and the spiced mushrooms on lush naan is just about the most satisfying dish you’ll ever eat. A $28 transcendental read, Eat delivers simple food that’s anything but lazy.
