Now the domestic season for Hass avocados is just beginning, but avocado aficionados can relax year ‘round. All winter it’s been Mexican Hass avocado season. Mexico is the largest Hass avocado producer in the world. And Hass is just one type! The fruit was first discovered by the Spanish conquistadors in Mexico in 1518, and only later introduced to the rest of the world. The Aztecs ate an avocado dish that just about anybody would recognize today – guacamole! The Hass variety, which is the most common in the U.S., came along much later. It’s actually a hybrid that was first cultivated in the 1920s. If you buy Hass avocados when they’re still firm, store them at room temperature and they’ll ripen in a week. They’re a great source of energy and loaded with protein.
