The playful energy of tacos is all too often stuck under a cheese-laden Mexican-American model. You know the kind I’m talking about – corn tortillas filled with melted cheese, carnitas and pico de gallo – maybe some avocado for a couple bucks extra. Sara Deseran is upping the taco game with her book, Tacolicious. As the co-owner of the wildly acclaimed San Francisco-based Tacolicious chain, Sara is fresh- and healthy-minded. Her book follows suit. The classics are there (the chile verde is saporous), but Sara also pioneers a collection of urban tacos that marry outside influences and Mexican cuisine. Highlights include butternut squash, kale, and crunchy pepitas tacos – which are the perfect blend of earthy and sweet, and tuna tostadas – dynamite! The book rounds out nicely with a fabulous drinks section. Try the Lolita squeeze or the pineapple-coconut agua fresca. For something stronger, the Bloody Maria is the way to go. Filled with gorgeous pictures, Tacolicious goes for $22.
