Purchasing sparkling wine can be downright confusing. Brut, Dry, Sec…there are many names to describe sparklers, none of which are particularly self-explanatory. So let me give you a quick crash course in sparkling wine terms that indicate the sweetness of the wine – otherwise known as the amount of sugar added after the second fermentation. The scale begins at Extra-Brut, the driest of the dry. Extra-Brut is unsweetened and represents the tartest of sparkling wines. Next is Brut, which is dry with minimal sweetness. Brut is the most common style of sparklers. Extra-Sec is still dry, but with a hint of sweetness. Sec is moderately sweet, while Demi-Sec lies on the sweet end of the spectrum.
