Welcome the queen of spices into your kitchen. Native to the Tamil Nadu state of south India comes one of my favorite spices: TURMERIC! A lesser known cousin to ginger, the brilliant golden-orange spice has a lovely but complex sour–warm, bitter flavor.
Turmeric is packed with antioxidants, antiviral, anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory characteristics, making it a wonder plant for cancer prevention and arthritis relief. A fun fact: former Miss USA Susie Castillo sprinkles her toothpaste with turmeric powder to whiten her teeth!
Don’t let it stand for too long, though. Turmeric is also known for its ability to stain… Though the spice is a key player in Indian cuisine, it can also enhance Western recipes. Add a dash to your grilled foods and stews. A good rule of thumb is to substitute 1 teaspoon turmeric for 1 teaspoon dried mustard for full effect.
